Ed, Steve, Simon and Becky took up the challenge against other local accountants, bankers and lawyers at the Corbet Arms pub in Uffington, Shrewsbury on 23 April.

Staged to mark St George's Day, the quiz tested their general knowledge of British sport, geography, entertainment, music and current affairs. Lawyers from Hatchers solicitors carried off the winner's plaque closely followed by colleagues from the firm's Whitchurch branch in second place.

It was the third annual quiz staged by BCR and raised £840 for the Severn Hospice.

There was some good-humoured rivalry between the professionals.

Perhaps they need to start preparing now for next year's rematch!!

SOLD OUT

We are launching a new informal networking group for individuals from charities, based in Shropshire, to get together and share ideas and experiences. This initial meeting is very much for us to discuss how the Shropshire Charity Networking group could work going forwards. The first meeting is taking place on Monday 20th May at 5pm at The Armoury in Shrewsbury, where we have a space reserved.

Reasons to come along…

  • To make new connections within the charity/not-for-profit sector in the county
  • To discuss the potential to signpost your service users to other organisations locally and the potential for collaborative working
  • To share ideas and discuss challenges
  • To offer support and advice to others in the sector

This idea came about when we were all looking for a group like this and couldn't find one out there! We are suggesting the meetings take place quarterly, and that there would be no charge. We would very much like this to be a relaxed and informal group but this is very much in the development stages and we are open to suggestions!

Organisers include:

Victoria Handbury-Madin, CEO at The Movement Centre: victoria@themovementcentre.co.uk

Clair Moelwyn-Williams, Partner at TCA Accountants: clair@tcallp.co.uk

Sophie Sayer, Business Manager at Sea Change Psychotherapy: Sophie@scpsychotherapy.co.uk

Effective Financial Management for small charities

Small charities are usually set up in response to a social need or by founders with a passion to create change or deliver on a mission – rarely are they set up with effective financial management in mind! But as a charity grows good financial management is crucial. In this half-day workshop we will be examining the key elements of effective financial management, offering practical advise on how to ensure that the right questions are asked, creating a better informed decision making process. The workshop will be focussed on small charities (annual income of less than £1million) and will be run as part of the Foundation for Social Improvement’s Small Charity Week.

This workshop will support you in:

  • gaining an understanding of the requirements for effective financial management
  • maximising income and controlling expenditure
  • reflecting on how your charity can improve its financial management
  • networking with other small charities and celebrate their achievements locally

This workshop will be delivered by Clair Moelwyn-Williams, a Partner at TCA Accountants based in Shrewsbury, who is a Chartered Accountant who specialises in advising small charities, as well as being an experienced presenter of charity training.
